A Canadian Cemetery near Vimy Ridge near Lille France. The grave markers mostly say to an unknown soldier from a Canadian or other brigade. Their were many cemeteries and the small rolling knolls around this area still has live land mines in the ground so it is all fenced off. This is in the Chunnel train to get across under the English Channel. This is on our way home from France on Tues. morning.
THis is the huge beautiful old building that is now the city building. in Calais. In the fore ground there are the statues of the 6 Burgers of Calais, who in the 13th century gave their lives to save the towns people. the architecture is fancy and very French.
Vimy Ridge monument to all the thousands of Canadian soldiers who died here and gave their lives in the 1st W.W. for our peace and freedom. This was a very moving and special place and we felt so much gratitude for all those soldiers and their families. We were so glad we stopped here. On our way to France. We drove to the port at Dover and took the ferry over to Calais. We drove with Foulgers and Nielsens went with Gneitings.
